New campaign seeks 1,000 smokers

January 3rd, 2012

Live Well Suffolk has launched a new campaign to help 1,000 smokers across Suffolk kick the habit for good.

Smoking kills three people every day in Suffolk and is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the county. The campaign will help 1,000 people quit smoking through a free programme of individual support delivered by stop smoking experts, with a choice of group or one-to-one therapy on offer throughout the county.

Tim Roberts, Director of Live Well Suffolk, said: “We want to help as many people stop smoking as possible and we have trained advisors to support people through the hardest part of quitting. We are confident that people are up to four times more likely to quit with us than on their own, so we are urging people to sign up and let us help them kick the habit for good!”

GPs and local pharmacies are supporting the campaign and nicotine products or other medication is provided on prescription as part of the programme. The stop smoking programmes are being run across the county with flexible times to suit as many people as possible.

Daniel Chapelle, health improvement manager from NHS Suffolk, added: “This campaign is so important as every day in Suffolk, smoking causes three deaths. Tobacco remains our leading cause of early death and disabilities like lung and heart disease and cancers.

Live Well Suffolk offers all round advice and support so help in managing a healthy weight whilst giving up smoking is also provided. There are free tasters in classes such as zumba or spinning as well as ‘cook and eat’ sessions to find out about eating a healthy diet.
