What are the Live Well Suffolk Oscars?
The Oscars are a film making competition which focuses on the tobacco, sugar and technology industries, and the impacts they have on our health and
well-being.
Cash prizes, along with a fun-filled red carpet event are available to your students or young people, along with classroom resources, session plans and interactive resources for teachers and youth leads.
The Live Well Suffolk Oscars is a progression from the Smoke Storm Oscars previously run through Live Well Suffolk.
See below for details or download our newsletter here.

Who can take part?
Any young person aged 11 to 16 years old from a school, youth club or young person’s project in Suffolk will be eligible for the competition.
Does it fit in with the curriculum in schools?
Yes. The Oscars project ties in directly with PSHE although can also be linked very closely with Science, Drama, Media, IT, PE, as well as English and Design & Technology. The project can even be offered to pupils as an extracurricular activity as long as all participants associate themselves to a school or youth club/project.
What support is on offer?
As part of the Live Well Suffolk Oscars we are offering all schools or youth groups in Suffolk a free resource called Operation Smoke Storm. This is an
online interactive programme aimed at educating young people on the topic of smoking and the tobacco industry.
Additional resources around the sugar industry and technology are being developed currently and will be available in January 2014. Support is also being offered to all schools and groups involved across Suffolk including
talks, mini workshops and assemblies which could all work towards building up knowledge around all these topics.
What does it cost?
Nothing – it’s free! Why?... because we work directly with young people and adults around stopping smoking and weight management. These are major health concerns and this forms part of our prevention work, alongside promoting access to our current service which is also free and fully funded to young people and adults across Suffolk.
What should the film be about?
All films need to be based on one of the following topics:
Smoking
- Chemicals in cigarettes
- Characteristics of smokers
- Tobacco industry facts and marketing of cigarettes
Healthy Eating
- How sugar affects the body
- Types of sugar used and food label reading activities
- Sugar industry facts and marketing strategies
Exercise and Activity
- History of the information or computer age
- How our physical activity levels have changed and how we should manage this
