Healthy Gardening course set to boost active lifestyles
April 12th, 2013We have launched a unique new course which is aiming to support local people with green fingers, who would like to incorporate a more active lifestyle.
We are encouraging would-be gardeners to participate in a new practical workshop which will combine useful advice and guidance on how to make small changes to improve your health, with a fun gardening session.
The free six-week course will start on Wednesday 17th April (1.45pm – 3.45pm) at the People’s Community Garden at Mildenhall Allotments on Halifax Road in Ipswich.
During each session, participants will learn about the importance of a balanced diet and will have the opportunity to develop tailored Personal Health Plans with our trained Community Health Coaches. They will then be encouraged to participate in supervised gardening activities in the People’s Community Garden thanks to a representative from Activ Lives.
Richard Crick, Senior Community Health Coach for Live Well Suffolk, said: “This is a new course for us and is a unique way of helping local people to improve their overall health and wellbeing. This initiative will encourage participants to get some fresh air, learn a new skill and make some new friends. It will also give people the opportunity to speak to our team about how they can make improvements to ensure a healthier lifestyle”
He continued: “Although gardening is a leisure activity, it can involve gentle physical activity so this course is a good way to encourage people to become more active. We also want to help people learn how to successfully grow their own vegetables as part of the scheme, as it may inspire them to make positive choices when cooking their own meals.”
The healthy gardening course is expected to be popular and advance booking is required.
To register a place on the course, phone Live Well Suffolk on 01473 229292 or email tasters@livewellsuffolk.org.uk. Some eligibility criteria will be applied.
