Fit Fans celebrate huge weight losses

December 6th, 2011

The first group of men who signed up to the Fit Fans programme in order to lose weight are celebrating today, having graduated with a combined weight loss of 220lbs (99kgs).

The weight loss, which was achieved by 23 men, is equivalent to a 16 stone man and was achieved over the 12 week programme which takes place at Ipswich Town Football Club and which focuses on exercise and healthy eating. The group were introduced to thePortman Roadcrowd at half time during a recent Ipswich Towngame and received great applause.

David Cowell, who lost 7.9kgs on the programme, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the course and I’m definitely going to continue, even though I’ve already lost a considerable amount of weight. I can see a huge change and I feel much healthier. It was great fun being with the rest of the group and I loved the ‘terrace ethic’ which helped when things got hard.

Rob Ward from Weight Management Centre who run the programme for Live Well Suffolk, said: “The guys have worked really hard and it’s a real achievement to have lost so much weight between them. They have all supported each other and adopted a team attitude when things got hard. Hopefully they will now take away what they have learned and continue to live a healthier life.”

Each weekly session included a 45 minute workshop about healthy eating followed by 45 minutes of physical activity.

David Cowell added: “I would recommend the programme to any other men who know they need to lose weight but don’t want to go down the traditional route of gyms or team sports. The course leader wasn’t preachy and didn’t make you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. He encouraged us and laughed with us – it’s a great way to get in shape!”

Fit Fans is delivered by Live Well Suffolk in conjunction with Ipswich Town Football Club and Weight Management Centre.  There is also an equivalent scheme for ladies who wish to lose weight in the same environment called ‘Fit Fans for Her’.
